Katie and Andrew Martin are Passive Juice Motel. We create art inspired by the world around us, often through a lens of pop culture and nostalgia. Our goal is to create pieces that can be enjoyed by anyone, and all are welcome here. Art and culture can tie the most unlikely individuals together. We need more of that in today’s world, even if through a T-shirt.
Over the 8 years we have been making prints, we have sent over 50,000 pieces to all 50 US states and every continent but Antarctica. We used to do each step ourselves, from the art to the post office; ordering blanks each week and maintaining over 100 screens. Then there was the never ending mountain of shipping. But we lived in a constant cycle of being behind in the process and still found ourselves struggling to get by.
We are now able to focus just on art and execution, and leave the rest to the pros who have teams of people to help us. We have partnered with print on demand shops all over the US, who dye, cut, sew, print and ship for us. They make our all over prints and leggings from bolts of fabric. They can keep inventory of the Bella Canvases, Next Levels, Los Angeles Apparels, Deltas and other blanks. They have teams dedicated to making the specialty products like sherpa blankets, stickers and mugs. It’s like we went from a team of two to a team of hundreds overnight. Not only does this streamline the shipping process for good, but it opened us to a world of new products and the ability to create art in full color and tone or keep things classic. We feel like Dorothy and we just landed in Oz.
Our collection is made on demand just for you and everything ships from the production facility in the US where it was made. Our network of shops are located in California, Florida, Nevada, Kentucky and Michigan. This allows everything to ship on average of 5 business days. All classic chest and pocket prints, as well as the cut and sew all over prints will ship in just 3 business days!
Some of the specialty pieces, such as mugs and blankets can take 5-7 business days. You will receive tracking updates via email once your items ship.
Due to all the custom nature of these products we can only offer to reprint or replace faulty orders. If there’s an issue with any quality or print, it is our policy to replace these pieces at no charge to you.
Our products go into production immediately to keep that speed to fulfillment up so once an order has been sent to production it is sent to the provider and you can no longer edit any details or cancel it. If the shipment details were incorrect, or the customer ordered the wrong size or color, we cannot go in and make changes and are not responsible and will not offer replacements or refunds. This is the policy of our providers so just make sure you have everything clicked and chosen correctly before finishing your checkout.

𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐅𝐔𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄
We started Passive Juice Motel in 2011 by purchasing a “Yudu”. We were putting together a desperate plan to keep our mortgage paid and two kids fed as our income wasn’t cutting it.
After getting some traction that felt like potential, if only more time was dedicated to the project, we took the leap in Oct of 2012 to quit our jobs and focus just on our new company. Then in the Winter, an ice storm caused a 100 year old tree to fall on our house where we also worked and left us without power for a month. Through luck and the necessity to succeed or lose our home, we were able to keep going and try other ways to survive.
We eventually renovated a 200 square foot garage behind our house and continued to expand. We bought a 6x2 manual printer and moved all our business to passivejuicemotel.com.
We shared shops with other printers, tried letting other shops take over our made to order set up, rented a $1,000 a month space for a couple years and hired printers to help us.
We tried doing flat lay all over prints ourselves with a giant fork printer and 10 foot dryer until Andrew hurt his back so badly he couldn’t do any of the labor. None of the plans streamlined the process or fixed all the kinks 100%.
We tried diversifying our endeavors to reduce the labor on ourselves in 2018, launching a coffee project, a sports brand and even meeting with a local wholesale print shop and hiring someone to run a wholesale program.
None of those plans proved to solve the root of our problem. Ultimately, we were taking on too many steps and burning ourselves out and not giving our customers the experience we sought to provide.
If it weren’t for each phase, we wouldn’t have had the experience and community we have. We started making our pieces with only sharpies and pens. We didn’t even know Photoshop and Illustrator were monthly subscriptions. It has allowed us to figure it out as we go and we are very thankful for what we get to call our jobs.
We told people for years that even in moments of great volumes, we still had not created the company we were after. Now, the table is set for the first time to operate in a way we could have only thought was a dream. Any idea we have, we can make it come to life and it won’t slow us down. We are thankful for everyone who has helped us live long enough to find our way. Thanks for being a part of what we do.
